A Study on the Visual Expression with The Unit Elements

-Centered on the Continuity and the Space in Time-

Since 1960's, compared to any other previous decades, we have experienced radical advances in cultural evolution. We barely managed to accept the fact of the changes rather than to adopt the changes, which were largely made by the media of the mass communication. The conventional methodology in visual design was utterly helpless by the revolutionarily-advanced methodology of the media, which tends to overemphasize the digital technology in the image processing and neglect the importance of basic ideas in visual design.

However, it is important to have a visual structure in representing the message as the image, which is joined with the subject.

The reason is why the basic elements that form the visual structure can present definite guidelines to contents and shapes of design and right direction in understanding social role of visual communication design.

Presentation of Image

This study was started in the hope that we could recognize the basic concepts of visual design by studying the various applications of the unit elements. For the new expressions of visual images, the unit elements were designed not to remind of the fixed ideas about the existing shapes.

The oval figure, as the unit, contains the meaning of time that symbolizes the continuity and the space in the two-dimension situation.

The continuity has not only the meaning of relationship between unit and unit but also the meaning of linking time and time.

But the continuous linking situation is expressed by the non-linear visual patterns irregularly. Calendar design is presented as the final study because calendar shows the continuous flow of the time and the space among units.
