This dissertation aims to provide Korean magazine industry in 21st
century with a motive to progress while studying its characters
of '90s, especially those of women magazines which had a great range
of change, and suggesting a plan for its improvement. This dissertation
refers to various documents to proceed its study as following.
First, It views a theoretical background of magazines.
Second, It regards current situations and characters of Korean
magazine industry in '90s.
Third, It analyzes government magazine policies in '90s.
Fourth, It figures out problems which Korean magazine industry
confronts and gives suggestions for improvement.
With references to relevant documents and literatures, this dissertation
reaches the following conclusion.
First, though Korean magazine industry in '90s has shown a huge
quantity increase thanks to the Press Liberalization after the Declaration
of 6.29 in the year 1987, its quality progress has not been balanced
with the quantity increase due to a drop out of distribution channel
and an over-competition among magazines. However, Korean magazine
industry in '90s is regarded more specialized with specific contents.
Second, thanks to technical development of computer, DTP method
was introduced in magazine production and CD-Rom magazine and webzine
appeared in magazine market. However, CD-Rom magazine failed because
of a lack of understanding of advertising effect while webzine is
still struggling against tough situations.
Third, though foreign investment is permitted up to 50% from January
lst, 1999, any sudden change has not been seen till now. Cooperation
with foreign magazines and licensed magazines seem to keep growing.
Fourth, government magazine policy seems to lack constitutional
supports comparing with that of publication or newspapers. Therefore,
a political, constitutional support of government for magazines
is strictly needed to mark a certain progress in Korean magazine
industry.
