Today, image comes up to people in advance of a written language from all fields such as political affairs, economy, class, gender, nationality and human races. Therefore, a question of "what is a image?" is a fundamental issue to understand the emerging cultural images. In fact, a current cultural ocularcentrism comes under the influence of development on image production technology and mass media. The thinking power and emotional expression by means of visual images are a basic instinct as seen in wall paintings in a cave in the primitive ages.
Invention of photography in the early nineteenth century led to an epoch-making conversion in a way of image product ion in human history. Photography is significant in a image history that the way of image production has been changed f om manual work to machine work using a flash based on optical science. So as a variety of image media based on photography were developed in the twentieth century, a time of image culture has come that images take the lead in a visual communication. Therefore, a question of "what is a image?" could be changed to another question of "what is a reflection?". That is , from this viewpoint, reflection has served as a pictograph in the twentieth century. Film has had a lead in the current culture reflection as the very core of image contents.
Film has an import ant effect upon the formation of the spirit of the time and unconsciousness in a group as well as a culture in the twentieth century. That is, film has exert ed a great er effect upon a social communication rather than other image contents and had tied and applied new image technologies before anything else. There has been a universal stream in an application of image technology that the techniques tried out in film are propagated through advertisement image, TV field.
So, the film, which has gain an advantage over other image media as a spectacle, has a great influence on a preference in a image. Today, image productions from other count ries as a completely commercial spectacle are making inroads into domestic image markets by making the greatest use of advanced special image effects.
For image generation, fascinated by the foreign image media representative of Hollywood in the U.S, too much image preference and a taste contaminated naturally by American culture from image media have led to a threaten of emotion and identity native to Korea.
This circumstance is expected to be worsen in the informational society in future that image informations would circulate on an equal speed with figure information. A system and human power producing image contents having a value of commodity, as a spectacle should be cultivated to keep our image market from others and secure sovereignty on image.
I would like to address a theory of building up hundreds of thousands of special effects experts in digital image in this point as there was a theory of hundreds of thousands of hackers to lay emphasis on an importance of internet innovation. That is , image communication will be a topic of conversation in the twentieth century.
In case of that we are inferior in capital, it is important to focus on the investment of advanced image special effects technology and development of media that integrate into digital technology to develope competitive power in a image culture.
Digital image technology is economical because it can take an effect of a real picture that needs enormous production cost on computer. New intellectuals in a image culture in the twentieth century should be cultivated through governmental investment for development of image technology and elementary schooling of educational program about analysis on a history and characteristic of media and new media, and educational program on reading of image language to enhance a general
capability of image appreciation.
So, I suppose that this study can be used as a basic guide of this critical mind by investigating image media in future centering around an analysis on s pecial effects and advanced image media, beginning from fundament al image s mark in history.
