<Abstract>
An Experimental Study of the Effect of Message Type and Recerver Attribute on Public Service Advertising.
This study is to investigate the effect of message type( informative/emotional) and receiver attribute(involvement level/ sex) on public service adverting about environmental problems.
Looking back into the prior studies, the results are not the same. So it was nessary to carry out this study carefulIy.
First, the following hypotheses were made.
Hl: There wi11 be no difference in the effect between informative message and emotional message or emotional message will be more effective.
H2: (1)High involved person will prefer the informative message to the emotional message.
(2)Man will prefer the informative message, while woman will prefer the emotional message.
The present study tested these hypotheses using experiment in which subjects were exposed to 2 types of manipulated advertisements and asked to answer a series of questions.
The measuring instruments were devised relying on many person's advice
The results are following.
Hypothesis <1> was supported. That is, the effect of message type between informative and emotional was not significantly different or the effect of emotional message was some more effective.
Hypothesis <2-1> was not supported. That is, high involved person did not significantly prefer the infrormative message.
Hypothesis <2-2> was supported. That is, man significantly prefered the informative message, while womam significantly preferred the emotional message.
But this study has some limitations.
First, more refined measuring scales are needed
Second, the representativeness of the sample is not quite satisfying.
