The Study on the Improving Plan of the Sign Board Concerning the Building

- Focusing of Lay out, Lettering and Illustration -

Because every thing was developed too fast and enormous in the course of the urbanization, every facilities have been in dis-harmony and ill-balanced with the beauty of the city. It is true that Sign Board has been one of the main factors of the visual defects, even though it became one of the important parts of city sights.

So I want to look for its problems and answers from Myong-dong which is the oldest and the most prosperous street, and to Bang-bae dong which is the new developing street.

First, I attempted to analyze the effects of the Sign Board to the City Sight, according to "the Theory of Visual perception" of Gestalt and "the visual elements of Design."

Shortly speaking this, various Sign Boards must be ordered and organized, for the harmoning and unified city sights.

I suggest that "Lay Out, Lettering, Illustration", as a core of the study, should be improved according to the theory of the chapter 3 and 4, and we must consider its regional character.

"the conclusion of Lay Out"

1) the basic formation of Sign Board should be organized with its background "Building and City Sight".

2) among the elements, there must be some blank space.

3) lay out must exist in "Illustration" rather than "Lettering" in terms of impression.

4) the essential point should be when Lay out.

"for the improvement of the Lettering"

1) It is necessary to have the image of the cultural tradition and to exclude the reckless using of foreign languages.

2) It is necessary to overcome the Gothic Letters, to develop the logotype, and to apply, the effective use of the standard type.

3) the expressions of logotypes are readable and visibility.

4) There are unification and balance.

5) Essential expressions of the Lettering which is graceful are needed.

"the conclusion of the Illustration"

1) It must have the motive for the Korean image.

2) It is more effective the concrete expression than the abstract expression

3) It must expressed actively

4) There must be some attractiveness in the picture or painting.

As to the general problems,

I show it how to arrange and place the Sign Board, its color, the faculty and the character to the city.

In conclusion, there problems are suggested for the purpose of creating the beautiful and pleasant city.
